The Norwegian civil defence organisation – known as Sivilforsvaret – is modernising its nationwide public warning system, using Airbus Defence and Space and TC Connect AS TETRA technology.

The companies will provide TMD880i modems to more than 1,200 siren sites across the country, connecting the warning system to national multi-agency TETRA-based network Nødnett. The decision was made by the Norwegian Ministry of Justice to integrate the warning system due to the imminent expiration of its current technology.

As well as linking to Nødnett, the modem is also able to transfer high volumes of data to the network, as well as tracking vehicles in real time using GPS positioning.

Speaking of the deployment, partner sales and new solutions manager at Airbus Anna Hyyrynen said: “Following our recent deliveries of handheld TH1n slimline radios to the healthcare sector, and P8GR Tetra pagers to firefighters, this is yet another good example of innovative solutions we are providing to the Norwegian market.”

According to Airbus, TC Connect played a key role in designing the cabinet for the control unit, combining the TMD880i with a remote terminal.
