Officers across the state have been personally issued with 9,398 mobile devices (iPad minis and iPhones in rugged cases) loaded with the iOS-native IRIS application suite that allow them to query local and national databases.
IRIS will eventually allow to file reports while in the field with the aid of iOS devices’ in-built voice-to-text transcription capabilities and automatically populate fields for the users’ activity logs. It also is integrated with the ESTA (Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority) CAD (computer-aided dispatch) software, which is used by the state of Victoria’s emergency services.
Motorola Solutions is providing an end-to-end managed service, which takes the work of managing the technology out of the hands of Victoria Police. The service, which is valued at more than AUD $50 million, will run for a minimum of five years with the potential for extension to 11 years.
IRIS has been developed by by Gridstone, the application development firm Motorola Solutions acquired in 2016.
“Victoria Police’s frontline officers now have access to data when and where they need it most and can manage their essential daily tasks more safely and efficiently,” said Steve Crutchfield, Motorola Solutions’ vice president and managing director.
“For example, the application can provide vital information to officers before they enter a potentially dangerous situation. In the future, the application will also free up officers’ time, enabling them to complete crime reporting and administrative tasks in the field instead of back at the station.”
