Speaking during the opening ceremony, he commented on the importance of communications technology to the safety and prosperity of the region, as well as the course of its development going forward. He said: “For the past few decades, we’ve seen rapid advancement in information and telecommunications technology. The ICT industry is one of the most dynamic and fastest growing sectors.”
He continued by discussing an approaching era of “intelligent connectivity,” in particular via the anticipated proliferation of technology such as 5G, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT). “This fusion of technologies will enable new transformation capabilities, potentially changing our society, and the way we live and work,” he said. “We are paying close attention to enhancing interconnectivity, putting in place a robust and progressive digital infrastructure.”
Going into greater detail about the future needs of critical communications users in Malaysia meanwhile – while also touching on its current, TETRA-based Government Integrated Radio Network (GIRN) –, he said: “The advancement of the telecommunications technology such as 4G has driven the demand for high speed wireless broadband, for both commercial users and mission critical communications. To me, the challenge now is that industry must be ready to deliver at the highest level, in relation to coverage, functionality and so on.
“I wish to thank The Critical Communications Association for inviting me to officiate Critical Communications World 2019. It is a great privilege and pleasure to be present at a leading annual event showcasing the latest innovations for critical communications.”
TCCA chief executive Tony Gray also addressed visitors during the opening ceremony. Speaking of the organisation’s current presence in Malaysia for CCW, he said: “What a wonderful welcome and greeting we’ve had in this country. Please convey our sincere gratitude to your government, as well as to our host operator Sapura and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission [MCMC].”
As well as Tan Chuan Ou, representatives from several other major players in the Malaysian critical communications sector will also be present over CCW 2019’s three days. These include vice president of Sapura, Praba Sangarajoo, as well as Al-Ishsal Ishak, chairman of the aforementioned MCMC.
Critical Communications World is the largest and most influential event in the global public safety comms field, attracting thousands of visitors every year. It is taking place between 18-20 June at the MITEC, Kuala Lumpur.
