ETSI hails successful 'future rail' Plugtests

ETSI has completed the fourth FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) Plugtests, held at the organisation’s headquarters in Sophia Antipolis at the beginning of July.

The Plugtests took place at ETSI's HQ

The event was organised in collaboration with TCCA, the European Union, EFTA and the International Union of Railways. As ever, the Plugtests brought together “key stakeholders, including railway operators, telecom vendors, system integrators, and industry experts worldwide.”

ETSI has listed a number of “key highlights” from the event, including ‘global collaboration’, ‘testing scenarios’, ‘3GPP specifications,’ ‘live demonstrations,’ ‘workshops and panels,’ and ‘networking and insights’.

Discussing these, a spokesperson said: “The Plugtests covered many scenarios, including mission-critical voice and data communication, based on 3GPP Rel-18, adhoc groups, and IP connectivity. Participants had the opportunity to test and validate the latest 3GPP specifications and standards developed by 3GPP and ETSI.”

The spokesperson continued: “Attendees showcased real-world applications and use cases of FRMCS technology. Workshops and panel discussions explored topics such as the future of railway communications, quality of service, and the integration of FRMCS with other technologies like 5G.”
